The Rose Swirl Cupcake

Since Valentine's Day is right around the corner, I thought I would share with you my attempt at cupcake making. Actually, the cupcake is pre-made thanks to a chocolate cake mix. For me, decorating the cupcake is the fun part. 
To achieve the "Rose Swirl" effect, you will need a piping bag and a 1M or 2D tip. Starting at on a 90 degree angle, from the middle, pipe down and then around in a circle until you reach the outer edge. When you get close to the outer edge, ease up on the frosting and pull up on the piping bag. To get the two toned color on the frosting, paint strips inside your piping bag with food coloring with your outside desired color (pink in this case). Then line your bag with your second toned frosting. As you can see, I haven't perfected the rose swirl effect quite yet. It sure is fun to practice though.

  2. Oh your roses are so pretty. I have tried & tried to pipe cakes & cupcakse with intricate designs like that and they never look as pretty as yours. I love to play around with decorating cakes & cupcakes though. I'll be sure to give your instructions a try next time - thus far I've just winged it. maybe that's been my problem...

  5. Ally - After many failed attempts, I realized you have to have a pastry bag and the right tip. Technique is important as well. As my husband says, "you got to have the right tools for the job" - Such a MAN thing to say, ha! Hope you and your hubby have a great V-day weekend as well.

  12. I've always had "piping bag issues" so i avoid them at all costs and just do a "rustic swirl" when I decorate cupcakes. But yours look so pretty and perfect - making me want to get over my "issues". Happy V-Day!
